$5,000 award available towards certificate studies at UCLA Extension
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. (February, 22, 2018) – The $5,000 Ingrid Skulstad Williams Scholarship at UCLA Extension is awarded to women enrolling in a professional certificate who would not otherwise have the financial means or opportunity to attend postsecondary education.
“Winning the Ingrid Skulstad Williams Scholarship was one of the proudest moments of my life,” says Tara O’Malley (pictured) who is currently enrolled in the online College Counseling Certificate program. “For a woman to be acknowledged and rewarded in these times was overwhelmingly appreciated, and any doubts I had in pursuing a major career change were erased. I credit this achievement with providing motivation and momentum as I complete my Certificate in College Counseling from UCLA Extension.”
Ingrid Skulstad Williams was born in Nazi-occupied Europe and immigrated to the United States as a young adult. Upon the death of her husband and faced with challenge of becoming self-supporting, Skulstad Williams pursued business courses at UCLA Extension in the late 1970s and went on to a successful career in the travel industry. Through her estate, the Ingrid Skulstad Williams Scholarship was established to help women pursue their educational goals. The nearly $300,000 gift to UCLA Extension exists in perpetuity.
According to the study, Certificates: Gateway to Gainful Employment and College Degrees (2012), by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, “women may seek certificates because they allow them more flexible work options, greater employability, or higher pay than other options.” The complete study can be found here.
UCLA Extension starts accepting applications for the annual Ingrid Skulstad Williams Scholarship on Monday, April 23, 2018. The deadline to apply is Monday, May 21, 2018, at 4pm.
